New York’s Child Victims Act extended the statute of limitations on childhood sexual assault cases in the state. Under this legislation, survivors of childhood sexual assault can file a lawsuit against abusers and other liable parties until they are 55 years old. Victims whose previous cases have expired have a 1-year period to file a civil case under the new law.In addition to evolving legislation, developments in technology give sexual assault survivors a way to report abuses and provide support to other victims. The JDoe app is a free, anonymous smartphone app that can be used to report sexual abuse.
